Descending a gold staircase behind a plumage of pink feathers, Lady Gaga kicked off the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Friday with a song belted out entirely in French.
The global superstar’s inclusion in the spectacle that opens the games was kept mum, but fans speculated the “Shallow” singer was set to take the stage on the River Seine in Paris, along with other rumored artists, including Celine Dion, Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande and French singer Aya Nakamura. But the ceremony’s lineup was entirely under wraps.
Gaga’s performance came part of the way through the Opening Ceremony, which took place outside of a stadium for the first time in history. With dancers in black, Gaga’s face was concealed and only her legs were visible until the accompanying dancers pulled back the pom-poms to reveal her visage.
The pop star then sang the French-language “Mon Truc en Plume” (“My Thing With Feathers”) while completing a choreographed routine. At a point during the show, Gaga got behind a piano to play briefly for spectators.
Gaga’s performance marked her first time in a televised live performance since the 95th Academy Awards in 2023 when she sang “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, which was nominated for best original song.
