Broadway Musical ‘Lempicka’ to Close May 19

AD

The new musical Lempicka announced that it will play its final performance on May 19, about one month after it opened on Broadway.

The musical, about the life of artist Tamara de Lempicka, is the first to announce closing after the Tony nominations were announced Tuesday. The two leads in the musical, Eden Espinosa and Amber Iman, received nominations, and the musical also got a nod for set design, but the show was not nominated in the critical category of best musical.

“We are so proud of our production and the family of artists and artisans who’ve shaped it. Few knew better than Tamara de Lempicka that art isn’t easy but always worth the effort,” producers Seaview and Jenny Niederhoffer said in a statement.

The production itself, which features a book by Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould; Music by Gould; Lyrics by Kreitzer; and direction by Rachel Chavkin, received mixed to negative reviews and has also been struggling at the box office.

The musical, which began previews at the Longacre Theatre on March 19, has seen declining grosses in recent weeks. In the most recent week of grosses, ending April 28, the musical brought in $288,101.
